The delicate frost called "rime" that forms on exceptionally cold days becomes truly enchanting when touched by the morning sun.
It is one of the most spectacular views I have experienced during my many years here. Truly something special.
Our hotel has a history dating back to 1953. Given that many of my ancestors had names like "Kamejiro" and "Kameo," with the kanji "Kame," meaning turtles, and considering turtles bring good luck, we named the hotel "Kameya Hotel." In the beginning, with only three rooms, it might have been a bit of an exaggeration to call it a "hotel," but it carried the aspiration of expanding the business in the future.
From your window, you can observe Lake Shirakaba up close, and as the seasons transition throughout the year, the scenery is consistently beautiful, especially in winter. As the leaves fall, the lake freezes, revealing deer footprints. On extremely cold days, we can witness the phenomenon of "rime," where ice forms on the branches, and when illuminated by the morning sun, it sparkles beautifully. This is one of the fantastic views I have encountered during my years here. It is not visible even when it is snowing; you can only witness it on very cold, clear days. This occurs when the air is colder than the lake temperature, causing vapor from the lake to attach to the trees and freeze. It usually happens in the early morning, around 6 to 7 a.m., before the temperature rises.
Lake Shirakaba is my sanctuary, a place where I can escape from everyday life. Strolling along the lakeside allows me to disconnect from the routine of daily life—it is a truly delightful experience.
I also recommend the Sunrise Lift on Mount Kurumayama - ascend the mountain in the early morning darkness, take the lift, and witness the sunrise. On days when a sea of clouds forms, you will see the clouds painted by the morning sun. No matter how many times I have experienced it, hearing about a friend's visit makes me think, "Ah, I would love to go again." It might be chilly in the morning, but please check the lift's schedule and consider a visit!
The view of Lake Shirakaba is stunning in every season. I hope you can plan a visit sometime.
